Essential Oils for Soothing Menopause Relief

Menopause is a natural part of life for women that often brings upon a tidal wave of difficult and uncomfortable symptoms, like hot flashes, insomnia, mood changes, feelings of sadness, vertigo, and more.

Studies show that using essential oils for aromatherapy and massage during menopause can provide soothing relief. According to Healthline, some of the most effective essential oils for menopause support include:

  1. Sage, which can reduce the frequency of hot flashes;
  2. Peppermint oil, which can improve sleep and reduce overall discomfort;
  3. Lavender, which is anti-inflammatory, may help to alleviate insomnia and reduce hot flashes;
  4. Geranium, which may improve sexual function and ease depression;
  5. Citrus, which can improve sleep.

Beyond these, other essential oils that can ease menopause symptoms tend to be floral, like rose oil, jasmine, and neroli, which is made from blossoms of the bitter orange tree.

DIY Roll-On Remedy

We found a great DIY recipe from Live Well Zone that’s easy and effective. It’s based on the findings from an aromatherapy massage study published in the National Library of Medicine – so, this recipe has been tested and proven. Of course, you can substitute oils in this recipe for others that you are more drawn to.

When working with essential oils, know that they are extremely potent and can be harmful if applied directly to the skin. Be sure to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil – like almond oil in the recipe below, jojoba, coconut, or olive oil.

You’ll want to perform a patch test before doing a full application of the blend. To do this, apply the diluted oil to a small area of skin, like the inside of the arm. Wait 24 hours to see if your skin experiences any inflammation or irritation.

A best practice is to also check with your doctor before using essential oils for menopausal relief. Your doctor will be able to tell you if the oils will affect any medications you’re taking or if they contain potential allergens.

Supplies:

  • 10mL dark glass roller bottle
  • Mini funnel, optional

Ingredients:

  • ¼ tsp evening primrose oil
  • 5 drops lavender oil
  • 2 drops geranium oil
  • 1 drop rose oil
  • 1 drop jasmine oil
  • Almond oil, to be used as the carrier oil

Instructions:

  1. Add the primrose, lavender, geranium, rose, and jasmine oils to the roller bottle.
  2. Fill the rest of the bottle with almond oil.
  3. Close the bottle and gently shake to combine.
  4. Roll the blend on your neck, shoulders, or the bottoms of your feet for easy menopause relief!

Note: Store your roll-on remedy in a cool, dark, dry place. Always keep essential oils away from children and pets.
